Excerpt:
In disgust, Zuri threw her pencil onto the desk. The writing implement struck the desktop with a loud crack and rolled onto the carpeted floor. Crossing her arms before her chest, Zuri stewed. She wasn’t getting anywhere. All she was accomplishing was making herself late to the gym. But that was the rub. If she didn’t get a good grade in the stupid class, she’d never go to the gym again. It was so unfair. When would she ever need to know stupid algebra anyway?
Heaving a sigh, she whispered. “Get a hold of yourself.”
She looked across the desk to her algebra book. All she needed to do was read a chapter or two. How bad could that be? Of course, whenever she tried to read the math book, she always found herself suddenly sleepy. Next to the book rested her phone with the promise of clips of Malee Chaiyathorn beating people to a pulp. She reached for the device. She’d watch a clip to get her blood flowing before tackling math.
Only her hand never made it to the phone. Her nose twitched—what was that putrid smell? And the cold? The library had been pleasantly warm when she entered. In her peripheral vision, she glimpsed the pencil she had tossed floating through the air, stopping to hover above the algebraic equation. The coldness radiated from around the pencil, which lowered to the paper and started writing.
Zuri’s hand went to her chest. Her heart raced so hard she could feel the rapid thump, thump, thump in her palm. Before her very eyes, the pencil wrote the solution to the equation.
Very cool.
